South African teachers in a staff room

    ESTABLISHED 1991

Serving South Africa's Educators Since 1991

NAPTOSA is the second-largest union in South African education, representing teachers across all nine provinces. We handle labour disputes, negotiate salary agreements, and run continuing professional development, all without political affiliation.

    OUR MISSION

To champion the professional status of every South African educator.

NAPTOSA exists to protect, empower, and advance the educators who shape the future of South Africa. Through expert labour representation, professional development, and unwavering advocacy, we ensure our members are never alone in their career journey.

We negotiate tirelessly at national and provincial levels, forging agreements that improve working conditions, salaries, and recognition for teachers across every sector of education.

    OUR VISION

A South Africa where every educator thrives.

We envision an education system where teachers are respected professionals, equipped with the resources and support they need to inspire the next generation. A system where labour rights are understood, upheld, and celebrated.

Through strategic partnerships, cutting-edge digital tools, and deep community roots, NAPTOSA is building this future - one educator at a time.

    OUR HISTORY

    Our history of advocacy

    1991

    The Federation

NAPTOSA was established as a federation of professional educator unions, uniting organisations that had separately represented South African teachers across different population groups during the apartheid era.

    1997

    Five Constituent Unions

By 1997 the NAPTOSA federation comprised five active constituent unions: the Transvaal Association of Teachers, Transvaal Teachers' Association, African Teachers' Association of South Africa, and additional regional bodies.

    2006

    Unitary Trade Union

On 1 November 2006, NAPTOSA formally registered as a unitary trade union under the LRA, merging the federation and six independent educator unions into a single professional body. The Professional Educators' Union (PEU) opted out of the amalgamation.

    2024

    Modern Leadership

NAPTOSA continues to expand its member services footprint as the second-largest union in South African education, working through provincial executives, digital platforms, and active ELRC and FEDUSA participation.
